Warum ist ein Gemalde Kunst, aber nicht das eigene Leben? Ausgehend von dieser Frage Michel Foucaults geht die Studie erstmals dem Verhaltnis von Kunst und Lebenskunst in der Fruhen Neuzeit nach. Am Beispiel des Jesuitenordens wird gezeigt, wie sehr die Gestaltung des eigenen Lebens in kunstlerischen Formen gedacht wurde. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, welchen Beitrag die kirchlichen Sakralraume des Ordens fur die Ausbildung einer jesuitischen Lebenskunst leisten konnten. Eine solche auf die Reform des Lebens bezogene Kunst vermag den Beitrag jesuitischer Kunst und Kunstpatronage neu zu wurdigen und eroffnet neue Perspektiven auf Hauptwerke der romischen Kunstgeschichte z. B. die Bernini-Kirche Sant Andrea al Quirinale oder Sant’Ignazio mit den Fresken von Andrea Pozzo.
