The book makes a central contribution to the study of image culture after 1945 and explores a long-forgotten generation of Austrian press photographers. It comprehensively traces the profession of photojournalist and reconstructs the complex interaction of competition, labor and market situation that characterized photojournalism during the Austrian occupation. The development of the profession of press photography in the still young Second Republic is inseparably linked to political events and the interests of the occupying powers. For the first time, the personal and institutional continuities to National Socialism/Austrofascism in Austrian photojournalism after 1945 are illuminated. With the help of profound analyses, the myth of “zero hour” can be deconstructed for this professional branch as well.
