On the 9th and 10th of May of 2003 a conference on Manchu Studies was held in Portland, Oregon. The conference was made possible by a generous grant from the Oregon Consortium for Asian Studies, who in turn received funds from the Ford Foundation. Scholars in various fields of Manchu studies from the United States and abroad attended and presented papers. The papers in this and the previous volume represent a majority of the papers presented at the conference. A few of the papers presented were or are being published elsewhere.
