The Northwest German Furstbischofe (prince-bishops) in Cologne, Munster, Osnabruck, Paderborn and Hildesheim faced a complex array of challenges dictated by their appointment as state sovereigns and princes of the Holy Roman Empire as well as by their spiritual function and the role they played in family life. This study refutes earlier assumptions suggesting these spiritual leaders left clerical tasks completely in the hands of their auxiliary bishops and focused solely on their role as princes. In a systematic and comparative approach, Bettina Braun for the first time examines key areas of the work of the prince-bishops vital to the understanding of the Furstbischofe in the final stage of the German Kingdom. German description: Die nordwestdeutschen Furstbischofe (Koln, Munster, Osnabruck, Paderborn und Hildesheim) bewegten sich in einem komplexen Bedingungsgefuge zwischen landesherrlicher Stellung, reichsfurstlicher Position, geistlichem Amt und der Familie. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass viele der Bischofe ihr geistliches Amt durchaus ernst nahmen und personlich weihten, firmten oder ihr Bistum visitierten. Deutlich wird aber auch, wo die Grenzen der personlichen Ausubung des bischoflichen Amtes lagen und welche Konstellationen die personliche Amtsausubung begunstigten und welche sie eher behinderten. Damit wird die bisherige Annahme, die geistlichen Fursten uberliessen ihre geistlichen Aufgaben vollstandig ihren Weihbischofen und konzentrierten sich allein auf ihre furstliche Stellung, uberwunden. Bettina Braun untersucht erstmals systematisch und vergleichend zentrale Bereiche des furstbischoflichen Handelns, ohne deren Kenntnis man den Furstbischofen in der Endphase des Alten Reichs nicht gerecht werden kann.
