Mitte 1911 kam der 25-jahrige Karl Barth in Safenwil auf seine erste Pfarrstelle. Die 53 Predigten des Bands stammen aus dem Jahr 1912: dem ersten Jahr, in dem Barth jeden Sonntag auf der Kanzel stand. Jede Predigt ist wortlich ausgearbeitet. Seine Gedanken liess Barth zunachst vom vorgelesenen Bibeltext leiten. So kam er selbst vorwarts zu noch Unentdecktem. Doch er las neben der Bibel auch die Zeitung. Was ihm darin beachtlich schien, fand den Weg auf die Kanzel: der Untergang der Titanic, der Besuch von Kaiser Wilhelm II. in der Schweiz, der Basler Friedenskongress der Sozialisten. Jede Predigt ist originell. Und der Pfarrer redete der Gemeinde nicht nach dem Mund: Wenn ich beliebt sein wollte, wurde ich schweigen.
