According to the medieval theory of perception and cognition, the actual presence of a mental image is a prerequisite for understanding. Without the subtle physical impression that forms within the perceptual apparatus as the outer senses (‘sensus exteriores’) pass on information to the inner senses (‘sensus interiores’) thought is not possible. If perception and recognition are tied to the presence of a phantasm, if the semantic content of language itself postulates the presence of a mental image, then poetry can also be understood in the sense of a reorganization of internal images, as a production process which traces its own conditions and puts them on display. Taking the works of Hartmann von Aue as a basis, this study examines how poetry can put into words the epistemological problem of phantasm formation in a culture whose pictorial and literary works must take account of representation through the processes of internal image construction. German description: Erst die Gegenwart eines Vorstellungsbildes stellt mittelalterlicher Wahrnehmungs- und Erkenntnistheorie zufolge die Voraussetzung fur das Verstehen dar. Ohne den feinstofflichen Abdruck, der sich im Wahrnehmungsapparat bildet, wenn die ausseren Sinne (sensus exteriores’) Informationen an die inneren Sinne (sensus interiores) vermitteln, ist Denken nicht moglich. Wenn Wahrnehmen und Erkennen an die Prasenz eines Phantasmas gebunden sind, wenn der semantische Gehalt der Sprache selbst das Vorhandensein eines Vorstellungsbildes voraussetzt, lasst sich auch das Dichten als Reorganisation der inneren Bilder verstehen, als Produktionsprozess, der die eigenen Bedingungen nachzeichnet und ins Bild setzt. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht am Werk Hartmanns von Aue, wie sich das erkenntnistheoretische Problem der Phantasmen-Bildung in einer Kultur, deren pikturale wie literarische Werke Rucksicht auf die Darstellbarkeit durch Prozesse innerer Verbildlichung nehmen mussen, poetisch umsetzen lasst.
