The Handbook spans an arc from philosophy’s Greek beginnings to Hegel and materialistic positions, and from the philosophy of language, to pragmatic, anthropologic and phenomenological experiences of practice in the twentieth century. At the same time, it makes a fundamental contribution to changing practice in the cultural sciences and humanities. In der Philosophie haben die Versuche einer Begriffsbestimmung eine lange Vorgeschichte, die bis in die Antike zuruckreicht. Aber Philosophien der Praxis, die es nur im Plural gibt, bemuhen sich nicht nur um eine Begriffsbestimmung, sondern insgesamt um ein Denken von der Praxis her. Sie beanspruchen, fur unser Verstandnis der gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Wirklichkeiten nicht theoretische Begriffe einfach vorauszusetzen (Subjekt und Objekt, Handlung und Struktur, Individuum und Gesellschaft), sondern von den Praktiken und den praktischen Vollzugen selbst erst zu erschliessen. Das Handbuch schlagt den Bogen von den griechischen Anfangen uber die Philosophie Hegels und materialistische Positionen bis zu sprachphilosophischen, pragmatischen, anthropologischen und phanomenologischen Praxisauffassungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Handbuch erlaubt eine vertiefte Reflexion jener Grundbegriffe und Traditionen, die heute in den Praxistheorien der Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften Anwendung finden.
