What are the reasons for the astonishing success of the Evangelical Lutheran Free Church in modern society? What kind of lifestyle do members of the scene cultivate? On the basis of nearly one hundred in-depth interviews and a range of representative studies the phenomenon of the free churches is explained and analyzed in as yet unmatched detail. This volume shows in detail how members convert to the faith, how they believe, practice, deal with authority, find a partner, educate their children, evangelize, switch churches and possibly leave the scene. The study claims that the success of the evangelical free churches lies in a combination of the scene’s seclusion and the fierce internal competition with regard to what it has to offer. This combination allows it both to hold onto the majority of children within the scene, as well as to convince people from outside to opt for the lifestyle of the free churches.
