This book develops a comprehensive concept of personal identity that concerns both theoretical and practical issues. Thereby, persons are understood as life forms that enter into complex relations of self and other. After discussing classical and recent conceptions of a person, the work develops a novel approach that allows us to conceive of persons as living beings who have an inviolable dignity.

Jörg Noller ist Vertretungsprofessor für Praktische Philosophie an der Universität Konstanz. Zuvor studierte er an den Universitäten Tübingen und München und verbrachte Forschungsaufenthalte an den Universitäten Notre Dame, Chicago und Pittsburgh. Seine Dissertation befasste sich mit dem Freiheitsproblem im Ausgang von Kant. Seine Habilitation war dem Thema „Personale Lebensformen“ gewidmet.
