Penser et par la atteindre le Bien, telle est la visee que Numenius donne a son lecteur. Pour y parvenir, un fait est a comprendre : le Bien est le penser, le penser est l’Etre ; il est le Vivant, l’Intellect et la Forme ; il est le dieu. Pour le rencontrer, il suffit de participer au penser, un penser pur de tout objet, de tout sujet, identique a l’etre et dispensant l’etre. Ainsi est-on dans le Bien, peut-etre meme est-on le Bien, a son niveau. Le livre decouvre le cheminement propose a cette fin par Numenius. Il montre comment ce philosophe ne a Apamee au IIe siecle le developpe en restant fidele a Platon et a ses aspirations pythagoriciennes, comment il l’etaie grace a son interet pour les religions dites orientales et comment il depasse ainsi les conflits internes au platonisme de son temps, preparant la voie a ses successeurs neoplatoniciens. Pour parfaire cette exploration, l’auteur propose en outre une comparaison avec l’enseignement contemporain des Oracles chaldaiques et un examen des informations fournies par les temoignages de Proclus sur la doctrine du philosophe.
