Am Beispiel des Magdeburger Ubergangs zur Reformation geht Michael Schilling der medialen Ausdifferenzierung der reformatorischen Offentlichkeit nach. Er verfolgt Argumentations- und Vorgehensweisen der konfessionellen Publizistik anhand zweier Kontroversen im Anschluss an Flacius’ ‘Catalogus testium veritatis’ und eines neu aufgefundenen Flugblatts aus dem Bohme-Kreis. Des Weiteren thematisiert er die formale und thematische Abstimmung des Flugblatt-Mediums auf unterschiedliche Zielgruppen (die humanistische ‘res publica litteraria’, den Gemeinen Mann, die europaischen Hofe). Neben den avisierten Offentlichkeiten bestimmte insbesondere der Markt die Inhalte und Gestaltung der Bildpublizistik. So wendete sich ein neu entdecktes Flugblatt in der Bosch-Nachfolge ebenso an unterschiedliche potenzielle Kaufergruppen wie die sechs Einblattdrucke des Schwankautors Michael Lindener. Man entwickelte mit seriellen Flugblattern neue mediale Formate oder orientierte sich an bewahrten Mustern, wie die Wirkung des Hans Sachs in der Bildpublizistik des 17. Jahrhunderts bezeugt.
