In the 13th and 14th centuries, a group of learned nuns from the Dominican monastery of Paradiese near Soest, Germany, wrote a whole series of wonderful choir books, of which some medieval manuscripts are still preserved in Dusseldorf today. The most beautiful and unconventional books were written, illuminated, and composed for their own community, whereby they lovingly commented and interpreted the liturgy with their own musical compositions and almost one thousand Latin inscriptions. The contributions to this volume unfold the meaning of music, text, and images in their historical context.
English Summary:Contributions by Wolfgang Angerstein (phoniatrist), Margot Fassler (music historian), Jeffrey Hamburger and Susan Marti (art historian) and Eva Schlotheuber (historian) unfold the meaning of music, text and images of the Dominicans of paradises at Soest in their historical context.
