Pour bien juger, il ne s'agit pas d'invoquer des regles qui vaudraient a priori, mais d'abord d'apprendre a se degager des apparences rationnelles et des prescriptions de la coutume. Montaigne confie la philosophie a l'indetermination d'un jugement personnel, dont il cultive sous les yeux de son lecteur l'aptitude a s'inventer soi-meme. L'essayiste ne renonce pas pour autant a se nourrir de la pensee des auteurs.
