English summary: Gunter Figal’s Phanomenologie der Freiheit (phenomenology of freedom) long ago became a definitive work. As a contribution to research on Heidegger, Figal provides an accurate interpretation of Sein und Zeit (Being and Time), taking into account essential aspects of Heidegger’s earlier and later thinking. Assessing critically and arguing carefully, the author carves out the factual strengths and weaknesses of Heidegger’s philosophy. In addition to this, Figal’s work represents a systematic discussion of the phenomenon of freedom. As Figal shows, freedom can be understood as a free sphere, as an openness of possibilities that first of all provides the actual space for freedom of action and freedom of the will. By discovering an understanding of freedom in Heidegger’s work that had not existed in the philosophical tradition, Figal is able to approach concepts of freedom including those of Aristotle, Kant and Wittgenstein in a new way. This work, originally published in 1988 and translated into several languages, is now available in a revised edition complemented by an autobiographical epilogue.
