Manfredi di Svevia – principe di Taranto e poi re di Sicilia – fu oggetto di una feroce damnatio memoriae gia in vita e ha poi ricevuto una minima attenzione in ambito storico. Ciononostante una rivalutazione storica e storico-artistica di questo sovrano e possibile attraverso l’impiego di un metodo di ricerca basato principalmente sullo studio delle fonti letterarie e sull’analisi del materiale artistico superstite. Da questa sinergia emerge un ritratto inedito del giovane sovrano, che fu particolarmente attivo in ambito artistico nella promozione di specifiche tecniche come l’architettura, la pittura su legno o la miniatura, capaci di veicolare in ambito monumentale e privato le sue ambizioni e rivendicazioni politiche, e si distinse anche come sostenitore di generi quali la musica, il canto e la poesia che presso la corte sveva rivestivano un ruolo importante.
