English summary: Anthologies are a popular and much criticized form of publication and play an important role in the dissemination of poetry. Based on material taken from an extensive database, Lyrik im Gebrauch (Poetry in use) provides the first historical overview of the development of poetry anthologies in the context of English publishing culture. This study examines anthologies in the context of cultural production and takes a look at questions concerning canonization and the role of communication through different media. Detailed analysis of anthologies such as ‘Tottel’s Miscellany’, Palgrave’s ‘Golden Treasury’ and the ‘Oxford Books of English Verse’ reveal more about the creation of anthologies and their effect on the conflict between aesthetic, technical and social conditions. In den 450 Jahren ihrer Geschichte gestaltet die englische Lyrikanthologie nationales kulturelles Gedachtnis und macht gleichzeitig eine gruppenlegitimierte Form der Selbstvergewisserung zur personlichen Aneignung verfugbar.
