Genealogia e uso di un'immagine medievale

Nel corso del medioevo scultori, predicatori, poeti e pittori hanno impiegato l’immagine di un uomo con la borsa attorno al collo punito all’inferno per rappresentare avari, usurai, peccatori, eretici, banditi e scomunicati. Il libro segue le tracce di questa raffigurazione infamante dalla Bisanzio del IX secolo all’Alvernia dell’XI, dalla Digione duecentesca ai comuni italiani dell’eta di Dante e Giotto, ricostruendo la vicenda di una figura che, pur rimanendo fedele alla propria funzione, subi una costante evoluzione: un’immagine che, nell’alternarsi delle contingenze e dei contesti, assunse significati sempre piu complessi e contribui alla formazione di un modo condiviso di pensare il male.
