Per molto tempo i poteri pubblici, i singoli individui e le autorita religiose del mondo cristiano fecero di nascosto la cosa innominabile che questo libro riporta alla luce: si appellarono ai turchi per risolvere i loro piu disparati problemi personali o politici. Cio accadde soprattutto nell’Italia del Rinascimento, esposta in prima linea sia al pericolo sia alla seduzione turca; e nell’esercizio si segnalarono persino alcuni papi in conflitto con altri principi cristiani. Evidentemente la memoria storica che infine ha prevalso, imperniata sullo scontro, e il frutto di una selezione ufficiale e moralistica dei fatti. Il libro analizza le permeabilita della linea di cesura fra cristiani e musulmani, per nervosa che essa fosse, senza farsi ingannare dalle deplorazioni lanciate dai contemporanei. Vengono raccontati scambi di lettere e di emissari, trattative segrete e offerte di doni, azioni di spionaggio e depistaggio nel periodo che va dalla conquista di Costantinopoli nel 1453 alla battaglia di Lepanto nel 1571. Malgrado la retorica di crociata, l’accesso della potenza turca al tavolo diplomatico europeo precedette di molto l’instaurazione di un sistema di relazioni internazionali dichiaratamente laiche.
