L’objectif de ce travail est de fournir un catalogue raisonne ainsi qu’une etude de la production manuscrite francaise et occitane du XIIe siecle. Encadre d’un cote par les premiers monuments, et de l’autre par l’essor du livre vernaculaire au cours du XIIIe siecle, ce corpus fondateur permet d’acceder aux origines livresques de la litterature de la France medievale. Des notices detaillees sont consacrees aux cent deux manuscrits qui contiennent des textes faisant partie a l’origine d’un projet de livre (comme le Roland d’Oxford ou l’Alexis de Hildesheim) ou des textes ajoutes au fil des annees sur des pages blanches ou dans les marges de manuscrits latins. Les temoignages vernaculaires sporadiques – gloses, traces, bribes, mots ou expressions isoles -, noyes dans un contexte linguistique latin, sont recenses brievement en appendice. Chaque notice comporte une description codicologique et paleographique, des commentaires linguistiques et litteraires, des renvois bibliographiques et la reproduction d’une page du manuscrit. Une introduction detaillee offre la synthese des elements recenses et les reprend dans le but de mettre en perspective les differentes lignes de force de cette premiere mise en livre vernaculaire.
