English summary: In his admirable work Les Masques, Georges Buraud was the first to make clear the profound significance behind the need that – throughout history and in every place in the world – has motivated human beings to hide their faces behind a figure modelled after an animal and made to resemble an ancestor or represent a god. He shows how such men – endowed with the power to observe the emotions that their appearance stirs in those who see them without having to reveal any of their own – actually identify with the being they strive to represent, and how they participate in and incite their whole group to participate in, the occult forces which rule the world. In the course of the ensuing passionate interaction, “all the powers with which the individual relates are the forces of his unconscious with which he has populated the world and which, in the form of fluids, presences, fears and energies, come back to him to compel or exalt him. He and his entire tribe (a colossal body of instinctive forces) become encompassed as if by a gigantic chrysalis in which they remain enclosed within this immense network of beneficial or frightening influences that in reality emanated from them. Georges Buraud a ete le premier a degager le sens profond du besoin qui, en tous temps et en tous lieux, a porte l’homme a derober son visage derriere une figure modelee a l’apparence d’un animal, a l’image d’un ancetre ou concue comme representative d’un dieu. Il montre comment cet homme, nanti du pouvoir d’observer les emotions que son apparition dechaine chez autrui sans rien livrer des siennes propres, s’identifie bel et bien avec l’etre pour lequel il cherche a se faire passer, comment il participe et fait participer tout son groupe aux forces occultes qui menent le monde. Au cours des echanges passionnels qui en resultent, toutes les puissances avec lesquelles l’individu entre en rapport sont les forces de son inconscient dont il a peuple le monde et qui, sous forme de fluides, de presences, de craintes, d’energies, reviennent vers lui pour le contraindre ou l’exalter. Lui-meme et toute sa tribu avec lui (faisceau colossal de forces instinctives) s’enveloppent, comme d’une chrysalide gigantesque, a l’interieur de laquelle ils restent enfermes, de ce reseau immense d’influences bienfaisantes ou terribles et qui est en realite sorti d’eux.
