Cet ouvrage propose une histoire des juifs et du judaïsme en Afrique du Nord durant l’Antiquité tardive, et plus particulièrement pour la période allant de 312 (victoire de Constantin sur Maxence) à 429 (invasion de l’Afrique par les Vandales). Il cherche à déterminer la place et l’identité des juifs et du judaïsme dans l’une des régions du monde romain pour laquelle le processus de christianisation est le mieux documenté. Il retrace aussi l’évolution de leur situation au cours de la période durant laquelle l’Afrique fut gouvernée par des empereurs romains chrétiens qui eurent de plus en plus de mal à supporter l’expression de l’altérité religieuse, ce qui eut des conséquences dommageables pour les juifs africains. Cette étude s’appuie sur un examen attentif de tous les types de sources – archéologiques, épigraphiques, littéraires et juridiques – de nature à éclairer cette histoire, avec une insistance particulière sur les sources littéraires latines africaines et les textes de lois romains, dont l’apport a trop souvent été négligé. <br /><br />This book offers a history of Jews and Judaism in North Africa during Late Antiquity, and more specifically for the period from 312 (Constantine’s victory over Maxentius) to 429 (the Vandal invasion of Africa). It seeks to determine the place and identity of Jews and Judaism in one of the regions of the Roman world for which the process of Christianization is best documented. It also traces the evolution of their situation during the period when Africa was ruled by Christian Roman emperors who found it increasingly difficult to tolerate the expression of religious plurality, with damaging consequences for African Jews. This study is based on a careful examination of all kinds of sources – archaeological, epigraphic, literary and legal – likely to shed light on this history, with particular emphasis on African Latin literary sources and Roman legal texts, whose contribution has too often been neglected.
