by M. Debie
Why did Middle Eastern Christians choose to write their history in Syriac from the 6th-13th centuries, even though they still read Greek, and Arabic became their daily vernacular? How did they interpret and understand their past and their present? The present volume examines historical and ecclesiastical texts to better understand the question of identity in this linguistic choice.
English summary: Why – and how – was history written in Syriac between the sixth and thirteenth centuries? This is the question that this book attempts to answer by understanding the issues of historical writ-ing that flourished in Syriac, one of the great cultural languages of the Middle East in Late An-tiquity and in the Middle Ages.
