This book offers a history of Jews and Judaism in North Africa during Late Antiquity, and more specifically for the period from 312 (Constantine’s victory over Maxentius) to 429 (the Vandal invasion of Africa). It seeks to determine the place and identity of Jews and Judaism in one of the regions of the Roman world for which the process of Christianization is best documented. It also traces the evolution of their situation during the period when Africa was ruled by Christian Roman emperors who found it increasingly difficult to tolerate the expression of religious plurality, with damaging consequences for African Jews. This study is based on a careful examination of all kinds of sources – archaeological, epigraphic, literary and legal – likely to shed light on this history, with particular emphasis on African Latin literary sources and Roman legal texts, whose contribution has too often been neglected.
