This new volume in the Apocrypha series presents the reader with a previously unpublished anthology of six Ethiopian texts dedicated to Saint Stephen, Christianity’s first martyr and first deacon. Stephen, the model deacon, is a particularly venerated figure in the Ethiopian Church. As early as late antiquity, and throughout the Middle Ages, texts translated from Greek and Arabic, as well as original compositions in Geez (classical Ethiopian), were produced, copied and adapted to the liturgy of the Ethiopian Church. The Ethiopian tradition on Stephen is thus singularly original and rich within the Christian East.
