Ses ecrits et ses realisations architecturales ou artistiques, tout en contribuant de maniere determinante a faire de la Renaissance ce qu’elle fut, ouvrent des champs que celle-ci a delaisses ou qu’elle n’a entrepris de labourer que tardivement. En plus de dialogues fort originaux et de ludi sceptiques ou d’un libertinage amer, on lui doit des ouvrages fondateurs dans des disciplines aussi diverses que la peinture, la sculpture, la grammaire, l’architecture et l’urbanisme, la mathematique appliquee, la cartographie, la cryptographie… Et on lui doit encore quelques archetypes fondamentaux dans le domaine architectural.
