Les choix lexicaux s’operent a partir de paradigmes ouverts, certes, mais non illimites, a l’interieur desquels des mots de sens voisin entretiennent des oppositions pertinentes dont le reseau structure la representation, commune a tous les usagers de la langue, de la realite extra-linguistique. L’etude systematique de ces oppositions pertinentes doit donc conduire a la fois a une meilleure connaissance du fonctionnement du lexique et a une ” image du monde ” naive, non-scientifique, propre a la culture dont releve le corpus choisi. Celui qui est traite ici est la plus grande oeuvre en prose du XIVe siecle, memorial de la Guerre de Cent Ans, et le materiel lexical etudie, celui que Froissart utilise pour signifier les sentiments, les pensees, les desirs, bref l’ensemble de la vie psychique des acteurs de ce drame. Voici donc le premier volume d’un ouvrage qui presente aux linguistes le traitement rigoureux d’un vaste ensemble lexical, et qui fournit aux historiens et aux psychologues un point de reference en revelant, incluse dans la langue commune a Froissart et a son public, leur representation de l’homme interieur.
