English summary: Philosophical spiritualism helped nineteenth-century French society recreate a place for God and religion in the aftermath of the Revolution. Through the works of Paul Janet, Jules Simon, Elme Caro, Emile Saisset, among others, the author shows how moral education shifted between conservatism and emancipation, the control of popular childhood, and an authentic liberal education adapted to the needs of democracy.
