L’epigramme connait, dans la latinite tardive, un succes et un renouveau tels que l’on peut parler de renaissance du genre. En effet, d’Ausone a Venance Fortunat, cette forme poetique nee en Grece et entree depuis longtemps dans le patrimoine latin s’abstrait en partie du format de l’epigramme a pointe, impose par Martial. Elle se diversifie en empruntant ses themes et ses formes a d’autres modeles – comme la tradition alexandrine – et en inventant, notamment dans le domaine chretien, des formes nouvelles. Ce renouveau la place au cur d’enjeux pluriels ? esthetiques, sociaux, moraux et religieux. Ce volume reunit les contributions de specialistes de la poesie latine tardive, mais aussi de l’epigramme grecque et des grands representants latins du genre. Il couvre tout le champ de l’intense production epigrammatique latine tardive (IVe-VIIe siecle), tant traditionnelle que chretienne. Il explore les divers aspects litteraires de cette floraison et s’attache egalement aux conditions de production des textes, particulierement aux facteurs socio-politiques, culturels et religieux qui sont a la source de la vitalite de cette forme poetique. Il offre ainsi une synthese inedite sur la renaissance d’un genre fort revelateur de la culture de l’Antiquite tardive.
