On etudie depuis fort longtemps la prononciation, la versification, la diction. La phonetique moderne a erige en science l’ensemble de ces disciplines. La phonologie s’est alors constituee plus specialement comme l’etude du systeme des sons d’une langue, dans le processus de la communication humaine. Le but de ce recueil de textes est de fournir au lecteur un choix representatif de reflexions sur le sujet. On part d’un ancetre peu connu du XIIe siecle, mais surtout des grands classiques modernes, Whitney, Saussure, Troubetzkoy, Jakobson, Martinet, Hjelmslev et de tous ceux qui ont place l’abstraction phonologique au centre de leurs recherches. On voit s’etablir peu a peu, avec une belle rigueur, les bases de la theorie contemporaine, dans ses rapports avec la linguistique generale. Chomsky, Halle, les generativistes et transformationnalistes les plus recents sont egalement scrupuleusement representes dans leur effort pour faire eclater une recherche nouvelle, elle-meme remise en question. Un grand nombre des textes de ce volume de Lectures etait d’acces difficile ; publies il y a parfois longtemps, souvent dans des revues etrangeres. Tous sont ici reproduits fidelement en francais, encadres de notes aussi concises que possible et destinees surtout a preciser leur contexte historique.
