A la fois science humaine et science deja hautement formalisee, au moins dans ses manifestations les plus recentes, la grammaire est une discipline d’acces difficile – et meme, ajouterons-nous, de jour en jour plus difficile. L’etudiant ou le specialiste d’une autre discipline qui desire s’initier a la linguistique sous l’aspect de la grammaire n’a guere le choix qu’entre deux moyens d’acces, l’un et l’autre assez decourageants. S’il consulte les manuels, il constatera vite que meme les meilleurs d’entre eux sont affectes de graves defauts : ils se situent necessairement dans la tradition grammaticale, et notamment pour la terminologie ; les analyses qu’ils proposent sont souvent presentees comme les seules possibles, meme sur les points les plus controverses. Notre debutant decide-t-il d’aborder directement les publications proprement scientifiques ? Il rencontre alors d’autres difficultes. L’intention de cet ouvrage est de faciliter les premiers pas du grammairien neophyte, en lui donnant sous une forme reduite une idee precise de la variete et de la complexite de la reflexion linguistique dans le domaine de la grammaire francaise.
