La décoration des pylônes ptolémaïques d’Edfou et de Philae

Portails monumentaux donnant acces aux temples egyptiens, les pylones etaient decores d’images et d’inscriptions, dont l’etude a ete jusqu’ici negligee, du moins pour la periode ptolemaique. En Haute-Egypte, les trois pylones des temples d’Edfou et de Philae sont les derniers representants integralement decores de cette forme architecturale tres prisee des anciens Egyptiens. Bien que leur construction date des regnes prosperes de Ptolemee VI Philometor et de son frere Ptolemee VIII Evergete II (180-116 av. J.-C.), leur decoration ne fut achevee que sous le regne de l’un des derniers rois lagides, Ptolemee XII Neos Dionysos (80-51 av. J.-C.). Ce livre etudie la decoration de chacun des trois edifices, dont l’un est toujours inedit. Il analyse les scenes de chaque pylone comme les elements d’un ensemble organise constituant un programme decoratif, dont le fil directeur est la transmission du pouvoir royal a l’heritier. Le pylone apparait ainsi comme un immense tableau d’affichage a la gloire du roi et de la divinite locale. La comparaison des trois programmes decoratifs permet de voir en outre comment operent les traditions theologiques locales (Horus a Edfou ; Isis a Philae), d’etablir l’anteriorite d’Edfou et la probable identite des equipes de decorateurs et d’emettre des hypotheses sur les conditions de realisation de ces pylones decores. L’ensemble permet de mieux comprendre comment la decoration se conforme a des regles et traditions vieilles de deux millenaires, tout en tenant compte des contraintes locales, qu’elles soient theologiques, topographiques ou historiques.
