Zwei junge Frauen aus dem evangelischen Damenstift Fischbeck an der Weser reisen 1719 nach Halle an der Saale, um den beruhmten Theologieprofessor August Hermann Francke zu treffen, dessen Manifest fur eine verinnerlichte Religiositat bei gleichzeitigem Engagement fur Bildung und Erziehung auf landesweite Zustimmung gestossen ist. Johanna Magdalena von Bismarck und ihre Freundin Anna Louise von Munchhausen bleiben ein Jahr in Halle und wiederholen ihre Besuche in den folgenden Jahren vier Mal. Sie werden Teil einer Gemeinschaft, die sich zu Gebet und Bibellekture zusammenfindet und es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, dem Glauben auch Taten folgen zu lassen. In Fischbeck engagieren sie sich fur die Schulbildung von Waisenkindern und fur die Unterstutzung in Not geratener verwitweter Frauen.
