English summary: Johann Victor Bredt (1879-1940) was a conservative politician of the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Since 1910, Professor for State, Administrative, National and Church Law in Marburg, he was first involved in the Free Conservative Party and later, during the Weimar Republic, with the Economic Party (WP), of which he was the intellectual head. In 1924, he became a delegate in the Reichstag and achieved the position of Minister of Justice in Brunings first cabinet, marking the height of his political career. In Bredts biography, key internal and external political aspects of the Weimar Republic are pooled together. Bredt personality is also able to be analyzed on the basis of questions about possible traditions and the breaks from the Empire that persisted into the Weimar period. Bredt embodied, as did many middle-class intellectuals of his time, the type of the nationally engaged bourgeois-conservative university professor. To the end, his great wish was for a restoration of the Hohenzollern monarchy, but it was clear to him, as a realist, that such a goal could not be realized. His period of activity in the WP and his activity in the Reichstag provided him with the means, as far as he was able, to shape the republic by increments in a national-conservative sense. Bredt particularly embodied as an important politician of the second wave the ambivalent intermediary position of a hesitant and goal-oriented republican within a generation fundamentally shaped by Bismarck.
