Nel Messico coloniale – epoca contraddistinta dall’emergere di un complesso processo di razzializzazione sociale – gli afromessicani furono una componente essenziale della societa novoispana. Dopo l’indipendenza furono cancellati dalla costruzione del discorso identitario nazionale, che basava l’idea di “messicanita” sull’unione tra conquistatori e indigeni. Il presente volume si basa sulle ricerche condotte presso l’archivio dell’Inquisizione di Citta del Messico: un rilevante corpus di fonti giuridiche utile a rintracciare gli aspetti dell’influenza che gli afromessicani ebbero nella costruzione della societa coloniale messicana.
