by Patrick Leiske
English summary: For a long time, the martial arts of medieval and early modern Europe seemed almost completely forgotten. The fact that a living tradition of the art of sword fighting in particular existed in the German-speaking world, onto which modern sports fencing builds practically seamlessly, only recently became a focus of scientific debate. From a technical-historical point of view, this study deals with the supreme discipline of the medieval and early modern art of fencing: the long sword. Which techniques were handed down in the writings of the old sword masters and how do they relate to the tactical context of the respective fighting style? The cultural-historical and functional significance of the weapon itself is also taken into account.
