English summary: The First World War marked both a high point and a turning point in the one hundred year assimilation of German Jews. Like many of their Christian peers, they volunteered, often enthusiastically, to bear arms. They believed that through their commitment both on the front and at home they would be recognized as fully German. However, at the end of the war and following defeat and revolution, German Jews were worse off than before. Even during the war, Pan-German agitation had begun to play a role in Germany. Rather than admitting to failure, ‘foreign forces’ such as Judaism were blamed for the defeat – without any reference to fact or argument. From here the road did not lead directly to Auschwitz, but there were already plenty of warning signs.
