This volume brings together the results of the conference “Communicating Rule: Assembly and Deliberation in the Early and High Middle Ages”, held within the framework of the DFG project “Pillars of Royal Rule”. The nineteen contributions address the mutual dependency between ruler and political elites in the Frankish-German realm from Carolingian times up to the twelfth century. From a range of perspectives, they examine the communication of rule and the opportunities available to secular and ecclesiastical elites to participate in the exercise of royal power. It becomes evident that this communication took place in various forms and that rule was exercised in line with specific political circumstances and challenges.
