Im Jahre 1902 wurde der belgische Architekt und Designer Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) von Grossherzog Wilhelm Ernst nach Weimar berufen, um dort als kunstlerischer Berater fur Handwerk, Kunstgewerbe und Industrie tatig zu werden. Ungewohnte Einblicke in Leben und Wirken seiner Weimarer Zeit erlaubt nun die vorliegende Edition von 200, zum Teil erstmals veroffentlichten Texten. Sie veranschaulichen die Vorgeschichte seiner Berufung nach Weimar, die anfangliche Inspektionstatigkeit in Handwerks- und Industrieeinrichtungen, die Entwicklung des von ihm eingerichteten Kunstgewerblichen Seminars zur Kunstgewerbeschule und deren Aktivitaten bis zur Schliessung 1915. Daruber hinaus finden auch Dokumente neuer Planungen zum kunstlerischen Einfluss auf Industrie und Handwerk sowie zur Lehre von Kunstgewerbe und Architektur nach dem Abschluss seiner Tatigkeit in Weimar Berucksichtigung, die nicht zuletzt die Grundung des Staatlichen Bauhauses 1919 vorbereiteten.
