In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the Comedie-Francaise staged numerous comedies, including plays by Moliere and his immediate successors. Premiered comedies had to fulfil many expectations set by the theatre company, the audience and Louis XIV’s cultural policy. This study examines the underlying concept of these comedies and contextualises them within their historical context.
