Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most important representatives of a young generation of conductors. As chief conductor of the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and as a sought-after guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic, he has played a key role in shaping the world of classical music for almost two decades. In this interdisciplinary study, Peter Moormann takes a look at Dudamel’s biography as well as his repertoire, his recordings and marketing, communication via social media, and reception by listeners and musicians. The focus is on the overarching question of what aesthetic experiences Dudamel delivers with live and media-represented audiovisual performances, and to what extent he contributes to an update of classical music and its reception.
