Ce petit livre a des ambitions fort modestes. Il ne pretend pas, cela va sans dire, initier a la linguistique francaise. Une matiere si complexe, si profondement renouvelee par les etudes les plus recentes ne se resume pas en quelques pages. Il n’est pas non plus, malgre les apparences, une veritable bibliographie. Pour presenter le moindre interet, il aurait fallu un ouvrage volumineux qui mette a jour, par exemple, l’excellente Introduction de M. R.-L. Wagner. La visee de ce Guide est tout autre. Loin de traiter d’une matiere aussi diverse ni de donner une bibliographie qui aurait sur tel ou tel point des pretentions d’exhaustivite, il indique sans plus, aussi brievement que possible, quels ouvrages peut choisir le debutant dans une foret de publications pour une initiation commode, comment il peut enrichir ses connaissances, comment enfin l’etudiant plus avance peut se constituer une bibliographie complete sur tel ou tel sujet. Il s’agit de donner des orientations, de conseiller dans le choix des lectures et de guider dans leur progression : pour chaque ouvrage on precise donc, au moins schematiquement, ce qu’on y trouve, et quel niveau est requis pour une lecture fructueuse. Ce Guide s’adresse aux etudiants de Lettres Classiques et de Lettres modernes, depuis la premiere annee du DUEL jusqu’au debut du troisieme cycle.
