English summary: Power and altruism are everyday phenomena for most creatures. Behind these concepts stand complex behavioral strategies that are deeply rooted in nature as well as in human culture. They both pose numerous empirical and normative questions with important relevance for scholarship and society. How have we changed or accommodated power and altruism in terms of evolution and historical culture? What specific uses do power and altruism have for those who make use them? Is it possible that they can both be used in a complementary fashion to achieve similar goals? On which neuro-biological processes are they dependent? Is power or force a psychic disease? Which social learning processes facilitate power and altruism? This book approaches these complex questions by means of a multi- and interdisciplinary strategy. It unifies articles and commentaries from the fields of biology, medicine, psychology, ethnology, sociology, history, and philosophy. These perspectives and methodologies make possible a better appreciation of these complex phenomena and should also encourage, even in public discourse, the ability to differentiate between power and altruism.
