Das “lange 19. Jahrhundert” – von der Franzosischen Revolution bis zum Ende des 1. Weltkrieges – kann auch in kirchenhistorischer Perspektive als eine Epoche wahrgenommen werden, in der Bruche wie Neuaufbruche, Traditionsorientierungen wie Modernisierungen zu verzeichnen sind. Das “kurze 20. Jahrhundert” – gepragt von den Folgen zweier Weltkriege und faschistischer wie kommunistischer Diktaturen – stellte die Kirchen vor neue Herausforderungen, nicht zuletzt die der Sakularisierung. Andererseits ist dieses Jahrhundert gepragt von einer okumenischen Annaherung der Konfessionen, von einer intensiven Vergangenheitsbewaltigung der Kirchen und von ihrer Teilnahme am demokratischen Neuaufbau. Erganzt werden die beiden grossen Abschnitte, die der Entwicklung in Deutschland und Europa besonderes Augenmerk schenken, durch einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Orthodoxie.
