English summary: Europe is more than just a geographical definition. It also comprises historical, cultural, ideational, political, economic and legal aspects. Such diversity, symbolized by the double association of Europe with the bull and the ring of stars is the subject of this volume. Over 30 essays are concerned with Europe not only as a cultural concept, the name of a continent, and an economic and political union of states, but also as Europa, the Greek mythological figure. In the cultural history of the Occident, this dual perspective of Europe has proved to be immensely fruitful for the development of European identities. There is still a need, however, for a multidisciplinary study. This volume therefore brings together renowned researchers from Europe and beyond, from the disciplines of history, philosophy and the philologies, literature, cultural and art sciences and musicology, as well as geography, ethnology, political science and law. German description: Der Begriff Europa ist mehr als eine geographische Definition. Er hat historische, kulturelle, ideelle wie politische, okonomische und juristische Aspekte. Diese Vielfalt in der doppelten Verknupfung Europas mit Stier und Sternenkranz untersucht dieser Band. Uber 30 Beitrage umkreisen nicht nur das Europa als Kulturbegriff, Kontinentalbezeichnung und okonomisch-politischen Staatenverbund, sondern auch die Europa der griechischen Mythologie. Die zweifache Perspektivierung Europas hat sich in der Kulturgeschichte des Okzidents als ungemein produktiv fur die Herausbildung europaischer Identitaten erwiesen. Eine multidisziplinare Erforschung dessen steht bislang noch aus. Der Band fuhrt daher namhafte WissenschaftlerInnen europaischer und auaereuropaischer Lander zusammen: Vertreter der Geschichte, Philosophie und der Philologien, Literatur- und Kultur-, Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft ebenso wie der Geographie, Ethnologie, Politologie und Rechtswissenschaft.

Prof. Dr. Michael Bernsen hat den Lehrstuhl für Vergleichende Romanistische Literaturwissenschaft / Mediävistik an der Universität Bonn inne.
