Die Erwahlungs- oder Pradestinationslehre gehorte lange zu den umstrittensten Traditionsbestanden christlicher Theologie. Den einen galt sie als unverzichtbar fur das Verstandnis des barmherzigen Gottes. Anderen dagegen schien die Vorstellung, dass nur ein Teil der Menschheit zum Heil vorherbestimmt sei, mit dem Gehalt des christlichen Glaubens nicht vereinbar. Nachdem sie deshalb lange Zeit in Misskredit geraten war, ist die Lehre von der Erwahlung heute in den Kirchen weitgehend vergessen. Matthias Zeindler schlagt einen neuen Zugang zum Thema Erwahlung vor. Der Begriff der Erwahlung, so die These, gehort in die Mitte des christlichen Gottesverstandnisses. Im Ruckgriff auf biblische Konzepte wird die Erwahlungslehre als Versuch interpretiert, Gottes Handeln in der Welt angemessen zu verstehen. Die Rede von der Erwahlung zeigt Gott als den, der menschlichem Handeln stets gnadig zuvorkommt. Daraus wird ein Verstandnis von Glaube und Kirche entwickelt, das sich kritisch unterscheidet von der gangigen Auffassung von Religion als autonomer Wahl. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, dass die Lehre von der Erwahlung nur ein Ziel hat: Gott als einen Gott der Liebe einsichtig zu machen.
