Kurfurst Carl Theodor liess 1764 romische Grabsteine in Mainz ankaufen, die heute als Seltenheiten gelten. Bisher unveroffentlichte Wandmalereien einer romischen Villa bei Oftersheim zeigen romischen Komfort in hochster Form. Als die letzten Romer Germanen waren, schutzten Alamannen die nasse Grenze, bis um 500 n. Chr. die Zeit der Franken begann.
English summary: This focus of this book is the mixing of cultures in the Roman Empire based on a number of recent archaeological excavations and restorations, especially from the area of the former Roman province of Germania Superior. The gift of Roman city councils of a temple for a Celtic deity as well as other evidence clearly remind us that the Roman Empire was a multicultural world even beyond the evidence from the various soldiers who served in regions far from their homes. This book presents photographs and information, previously unpublicized, that provide glimpses into how the Roman world both borrowed from its Celtic predecessors and was passed onto its Germanic inheritors. German description: Die multikulturelle Gesellschaft der Romerzeit offenbart sich nicht nur in der Herkunft der Soldaten aus aller Welt, sondern z. B. auch in der Schenkung eines Stadtrats des antiken Ladenburg und Speyer, der einem gallischen Gott einen Tempel stiftete. Weitere Steine, die in der Region gefunden wurden, lassen die romische Gotterwelt lebendig werden. Nach ihrer Restaurierung werden sie hier in neuen Aufnahmen vorgestellt. Aus aktuellen Grabungen stammen rekonstruierte und bislang unveroffentlichte feine Wandmalereien (Villa rustica bei Oftersheim, um 100 n. Chr.). Mitte des 3. Jahrhunderts wurde die Villa abgebaut. Einige Werkzeuge, wie ein einzigartiger “Hufschaber”, blieben dabei liegen. Am Ende der Antike sicherten germanische Alamannen die romische Grenze an Rhein und Neckar. Sie mischten eigene und romische Objekte in Tracht und Haus. Das letzte Zeugnis der Antike ist das Grab eines kleinen Madchens, das mit einem kostbaren Silberarmreif bestattet wurde.
