Die in diesem Band versammelten Beitrage beruhen grossteils auf den Vortragen des gleichnamigen Kongresses, den das Institut fur Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit 2011 in Krems veranstaltete. Ziel der Tagung war es, die mittlerweile zum Axiom gewordene These vom “christlichen Mittelalter” im Sinne der transzendentalen Durchdringung aller Lebensbereiche zu hinterfragen. Ein breites Spektrum an Disziplinen beschaftigt sich mit mittelalterlichen Diskursen, Raumkonzepten, Zeitauffassungen und Aspekten materieller Kultur im Spannungsfeld von Profanem und Religiosem. Auf der Basis verschiedener Quellengattungen wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob das christliche Sinnmonopol ubiquitar war oder ob sich auch Denkmodelle, Lebensformen, Verhaltensmuster usw. feststellen lassen, die sich der religiosen Deutung entzogen oder mit dieser konkurrierten. Generell geht es dabei auch um die Frage, ob sich ansatzhaft Sakularisierungsprozesse im Mittelalter identifizieren lassen.
