Die Verba Seniorum als lateinische Uberlieferung der altkirchlichen Apophthegmenliteratur haben eine enorme Bedeutung fur die ganze Monchtumsgeschichte. Jan Reitzner legt mit seiner Untersuchung erstmals eine Detailstudie zu dieser gerade im benediktinischen Monchtum als Teil der Vitas Patrum intensiv rezipierten Literatur vor. Neben der teils erstmaligen Analyse von uber hundert Handschriften stehen philologische Detailexegesen bei der Benediktsregel, dem pseudogelasianischen Dekret, Bernhard von Clairvaux, Petrus Venerabilis und weiteren bedeutenden Gestalten des abendlandischen Monchtums bis ins 13. Jahrhundert im Mittelpunkt. Dabei zeigen sich im “bewegten” 12. Jahrhundert mit erstaunlicher Klarheit zwei unterschiedliche Arten der Rezeption der Verba Seniorum: Die monastische Welt der traditionellen Kloster folgt dem Paradigma eines langsamen Fortschreitens (meliorare). Besonders deutlich zeigt sich das bei Petrus Venerabilis, dem letzten groaen Abt Clunys, und dem Kluniazenser Verband. In der monastischen Reformbewegung hingegen zeigen sich unter dem Paradigma der Reformation (reformare) erhebliche Diskontinuitaten und eine vollig neue Art der Rezeption. Besonders deutlich wird das bei Bernhard von Clairvaux und den Zisterziensern, aber auch bei den Kartausern. Ein umfangreiches Register erschlieat die vielfaltigen Bezugnahmen in der Literatur und die Beschreibung der Handschriften und bildet so den Ausgangspunkt fur weitere Forschungen.
