English summary: In the traditional literature, charters (Urkunden) were chiefly viewed as instruments that secured legal rights; the meta-diplomatic approach of this book, however, seeks to balance those dimensions that are lost when a charter is reduced to its text. As a consequence, the charter is viewed in a new way as part of a visual medium, whose external form is not without significance. From this enhanced perspective, even sources from Carolingian society can be viewed with new interpretive horizons; because the text of these sources is already well known, the meaning of these sources as symbols of lordship is now investigated on the basis of their memorial characteristics. This study first puts forward for examination the original Carolingian imperial and royal charters from the years 751 to 911 CE. These documents are direct witnesses of communicative processes in the Carolingian period and served as an explicit expression of a sovereign’s will- points already evident in the external form of the charter itself. After this initial examination, private charters in individual regions are analyzed, and the results from these sources are compared to, and confront, the findings from the imperial and royal charters. Through these approaches to the sources, Carolingian charter practices, and so chiefly their developmental and operational situations, are presented in their entirety, pursuing the goal of making a contribution into the semiotic grammar of sovereign symbols from the charters from the Carolingian period. An extensive register and graphic representations round out this monumental work.
