English summary: This book contains ten studies that were a part of the international conference “World View and World Conception between East and West,” held in June 2013 at the University Center Obergurgl in Tyrol. Held in commemoration of Dr. Prof. Reinhold Bichler’s retirement, the esteemed scholar’s work was the basis for the conference topics including the conception of space, time, and views of the world, their diffusion and social context as well as their deployment within discursive projects related to how ancient peoples viewed their world. These studies offer important insights into the value and meaning of such constructions and how they helped develop an ethnocentrically infused world-view, whose literary artefacts are at the center of these investigations. These studies span a chronological and geographic range from the Neo-Assyrian Empire in the 8th century B.C.E. to Late Antiquity and the imperial propaganda of Theodoric at the turn of the 6th century C.E. While the majority of the articles are concerned with the conception and imagining of the world among ancient Mediterranean societies, individual articles also bring into view diverse areas such as the Indian Ocean, Central Asia or even the whole world. All of the contributions to this volume work are in constant dialogue with each other to challenge major paradigms while anchoring their research in concrete historical contexts. German description: Der vorliegende Band umfasst zehn Beitrage, die bei der internationalen Tagung “World View and World Conception between East and West” (19.-22. Juni 2013) im Universitatszentrum Obergurgl, Tirol prasentiert wurden. Anlasslich der Emeritierung Reinhold Bichlers standen dort laufende Arbeiten zur Diskussion, die eines seiner zentralen Forschungsanliegen aufgreifen: die Konzeption von Raumen, Zeiten und Weltbildern, ihre Verbreitung und ihr Sitz im Leben sowie die diskursive Beschaftigung mit diesen Weltbildern. Dabei stehen die mit Gewicht und Bedeutung aufgeladenen Konstruktionen einer ethnozentrisch angelegten Weltsicht und deren literarischer Niederschlag im Zentrum der Untersuchungen. Diese spannen einen breiten chronologischen und geografischen Bogen, der vom neuassyrischen Imperium des 8. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis zur spatantiken Reichsbildung Theoderichs an der Wende vom 5. zum 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. reicht. Auch wenn sich die Mehrzahl der Beitrage mit Weltbildern und Weltkonzeptionen beschaftigt, die um den antiken Mittelmeerraum kreisen, so greifen doch einzelne Beitrage wesentlich weiter aus und rucken den Indischen Ozean, Zentralasien oder gar die Oikumene in das nahere Blickfeld. Allen Beitragen gemeinsam ist die Auseinandersetzung mit einer Autorenperspektive, die in ihren Einzelschichten dekonstruiert und in einen konkreten historischen Kontext eingebettet wird.
